Chiropractic
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic
is a healing discipline firmly grounded in science. Although its
main focus is the relationship between the skeleton (particularly
the spine) and the nervous system that runs through it, chiropractic
is concerned with the care of the entire body. Chiropractors use
various diagnostic methods, including -rays, to discover the state
of your health, paying particular attention to your spine and bone
structure. Spinal manual adjustments are their primary methods of
helping your body heal itself.
The word chiropractic comes from a combination
of the Greek words "chiro" and "praktikis",
meaning "done by hand". "Treatment by hand"
was an accepted form of therapy in ancient Greece. Hippocrates,
who is regarded as the founder of medical inquiry, made the first
recorded references to spinal manipulation. 1995 marked the 100th
anniversary of the evolution of modern chiropractic. In recognition
of this milestone, centennial celebrations were held across Canada
and throughout the world. Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp
in recognition of the centennial of the profession, and to honour
its Canadian Found, Dr. Daniel David Palmer.
Why Chiropractic?
The Chiropractic profession is often poorly misunderstood, and
many people have no experience with Chiropractors. Chiropractic
is founded upon the premise that when spinal bones are functioning
in normal motion and position, the central nervous system can deliver
its vital information for the proper function of the body's tissues,
organs and systems. With this philosophy, Chiropractic is not simply
treatment for pain!
Like Dentistry and regular check ups, Chiropractic involves regular
check ups to identify subluxations in the spine, comparative to
cavities in the mouth.
Everyday occurrences can cause the spinal bones to lose their usual
motion or position. This can set off a chain reaction affecting
the vertebrae, nerves, muscles, soft tissues and results in degenerative
changes throughout the body.
Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to detect and correct
subluxations through safe, gentle and specific adjustments.
Chiropractic education and statutory regulation
Chiropractors are very well trained health care professionals.
On average five years full-time university studies are required.
The studies include anatomy, neurology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry,
behavioural sciences, diagnosis and manipulative skills to mention
but a few. In the UK all practicing chiropractors are required by
law to register with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).
Today chiropractors are the world's most highly trained and skilled
specialists in manipulative therapy. (Spinal adjusting)
